Princess Lalla Hasna dedicates Islamic calligraphy exhibition in Marrakesh
Morocco, Culture, 5/1/2000
Princess Lalla Hasna dedicated on Saturday an Islamic calligraphy exhibition held at a museum in Marrakesh, featuring items dating back to the period between the 9th and 19th centuries.
The museum galleries display some items shown for the first time. Some calligraphies, representing the Koufi, Moghrebi, Thuluth and Muhaqqaq writing styles, reflect a particular richness in colors and supports used (paper, parchments, fabrics, wood and metal) as well as the richness of content, including Koran, hadiths (prophet's saying) and poems.
The Omar Benjelloun foundation which organizes the exhibition has also published a 207-page book in Arabic, French and English and a compact disc presenting the collection and tracing the historical evolution of this typical Arab-Islamic art with its various styles.
The princess also visited the restoration works of the "Al Koba Al Mourabittia" (Al Moravides' Dome) and the rehabilitation of an old school in the city.
