Morocco seeks CONCACAF support to 2006 World Cup bid
Morocco, Sports, 5/1/2000

Moroccan youth and sports minister, Ahmed El Moussaoui, asked Jack Warner, chairman of the Central, North American and Caribbean Football Confederation "CONCACAF" to endeavor with member countries to support Morocco's candidacy to host the 2006 world soccer cup.

The Moroccan official briefed the CONCACAF chairman on the various stages covered in the bid and the strategy adopted to publicize Morocco's potentials.

According to a statement of the Youth and Sports Ministry, during the meeting that was attended by Othmane Assaad, secretary general of the Arab Football Union, Warner-- who visited Morocco from April 28 to May 1-- promised to intervene with the CONCACAF member countries to support the kingdom's bid and to promote the Moroccan candidacy.

Meanwhile, the secretary general of the Arab Football Union renewed the Arab countries' total and unconditional support to the Moroccan candidacy, an honor for all Arabs and Africans.

On Friday, the minister also met a group of French journalists and explained how Morocco's political, economic and social situation entitle the kingdom to apply for the honor to host the final stages of the 2006 World Cup. He told the French journalists about the progress made in the projects submitted to FIFA, mainly the renovation of two sports complexes in Rabat and Casablanca and the construction of a new compound in Fez.

FIFA will decide next July which of Morocco, South Africa, Brazil and Germany will host the 2006 world soccer cup.
