Information in the new century is vital

Addressing the conference of World Associations of Press Councils, Nabil Osman, Chairman of State Information Service and Member of Supreme Council of Press talked about "Knowledge and Information in the New Century". Osman gave a resume of the main ideas of his presentation.

He dealt with the embedded fear of globalization and globalism as people tend to resist change.

He mentioned that a great leap has happened in the field of information and technology.

He shared some ideas of his:

1) That the Internet is the real symbol of globalization. He referred to the 'big brother' in George Orwell's (1984) meaning to say that Media and information are our real 'big brother' today. In spite of the complaints of the 3rd World in the 80s concerning the imbalance of flow of information, no one could complain about that today: as the Internet gives an equal chance for everyone. To prove oneself with one's qualities and skills.

2-The Internet has also erased barriers and the issue of sovereignty is being discussed.

3- Internet is a tool of-deepening democratization around the "robe all barriers will be removed and there will be no way to escape facts. 'When we speak of Internet, we speak of knowledge, poverty now is that of knowledge.'

Both rich and poor have an equal opportunity to become one and the same in terms of access to knowledge which will lead to stability in the international arena.

He also dealt with the 'quality of the individual' as what really counts. In the coming decade we'll see a different newspaper.

He concluded that newspapers and books will always be in the lead, even in the presence of TV and the Internet.
