Door wide open for progress on Syrian track
Egypt-USA, Politics, 5/1/2000

Foreign Minister Amr Moussa Saturday received US Assistant Secretary of State for Middle East Affairs Edward Walker.

Following the meeting, Walker said they exchanged views on the peace process on the Syrian and Palestinian tracks, preparations for Israel's withdrawal from Lebanon, in addition to means of boosting cooperation between Egypt and the US.

The American official stressed the importance of realizing that the door is wide open for progress on the Syrian track, adding that the US will continue to work for promoting talks on both the Syrian and Palestinian tracks.

Walker said US Middle East Peace Envoy Dennis Ross is due in the region on Sunday to take part in Israeli-Palestinian negotiations to be held in Eilat.

"Washington is exerting intensive efforts to help UN Secretary General Kofi Annan supervise Israel's pull-out from south Lebanon ", he added.

He went on to say that his talks with President Hosni Mubarak and Foreign Minister Amr Moussa are always constructive in light of their wise views regarding the peacemaking.

He said he will convey those ideas to US President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Madeleine Albright to define what could be done to propel the peace drive, an Egyptian statement said.
