Sudan suffers one million tons of food deficiency
Sudan, Economics, 5/1/2000

The UN World Food Program has called for giving urgent food aid to avoid a food crisis in Sudan, saying that the current storage in the country will expire in June.

A statement from the UN office stated that the program is drastically in need of promises of food aid to Sudan, as the current storage will expire in June. The statement said the current storage will expire when the need will reach its peak in the starvation months during the period from April until October every year.

The program added that there is urgent need for additional contributions to avoid critical conditions in Sudan similar to what took place in Ethiopia, saying that the food deficiency in Sudan is currently estimated at 1.35 million tons, which almost doubles the deficiency estimated in December 1999 and was 718,000 tons of food stuffs.
