Women parliamentarians committee for the IPU meets in Amman

The coordination committee of women parliamentarians taking part in the 103rd International Parliamentary Union on Sunday in Amman held a closed-door meeting, during which they discussed the agenda of the women parliamentarians' meeting and procedural matters pertaining to the meeting.
The president of the executive committee of the Co-ordinating Committee of Women Parliamentarians, Shiela Finestone, stated the meeting will discuss means to guarantee women's nomination for leading posts in the conference. She added that the coordination committee, in which some 140 women parliament members are taking part, will discuss issues pertinent to dialogue among civilizations, cultures, the realization of peace, stability and comprehensive development in the world.
Meanwhile, the third meeting of the women parliamentarians taking part in the deliberations of the 103rd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) was also opened in Amman. The Syrian delegation was led by Daad Khaddam.
The meeting was chaired by the IPU chairperson Najmah Hibatullah, in the presence of the IPU's secretary general, Anderson Johnson; the chairman of the Jordanian al-Ayan house (Upper House), Zayd al-Refa; and the speaker of the Jordanian Parliament, Abdul Hadi al-Majali.
During the meeting the meeting's agenda and the reports of the coordination committee and the committee on partnership between the two sexes were approved.
The report of the executive committee centered on means of guaranteeing an effective role for women in international parliaments, addressing the issues of dialogue among civilizations and cultures, means of ensuring a tangible role for parliamentary woman in the results of international parliamentary conferences through concluding decisions which have links to women's rights, and cultural diversity among peoples.
Concerning the report of partnership between the two sexes, those participating in the meeting discussed measures that can ensure equality of women's participation with men in political and parliamentary life.
The women parliamentarians also underlined the importance of having at least one woman parliamentarian in each parliamentary delegation in regional and international meetings.
They reviewed the progress attained since the Beijing declaration of 1995 and the work plan to be discussed during the meeting of the UN General Assembly on June 5- 9 to discuss obstacles and difficulties impeding such a plan.
