Report: Syrian-Egyptian summit within coming days
Regional-Syria, Politics, 5/1/2000

The Egyptian weekly "October" issued on Sunday said that a summit meeting is expected to be held between Syrian President Hafez al-Assad and Egyptian President Muhammad Hosni Mubarak within the coming days.

The weekly quoted the Syrian ambassador to Cairo, Majid Abu Saleh, as saying in a statement that contacts are continuous between Egypt and Syria for consultations over the developments of the peace process in the region.

On the US role, the Syrian ambassador said that US President Bill Clinton has exerted great efforts to achieve peace through several years and that Syria appreciates all sincere efforts made to this effect. He added, "But pushing the peace process forward needs a fundamental change in the Israeli position in order to reach a definite commitment to complete withdrawal from the Golan, until June 4, 1967 border lines."
