Walker seeks Mubarak's views on regional issues
Egypt-USA, Politics, 4/29/2000

US Assistant Secretary of State for Middle East Affairs Edward Walker said that US President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Madeleine Albright requested his Middle East tour.

Emerging from a meeting with President Hosni Mubarak, Walker said the tour aims at reviewing the Middle East peace process especially on the Syrian and Palestinian tracks as well as the Israeli withdrawal from South Lebanon.

Walker voiced keenness on listening to Mubarak's views on the future steps to be taken to achieve progress, especially on the Palestinian track and the Israeli pullout of Lebanon.

Asked whether he carried new proposals, Walker said he would listen to parties' proposals rather than offer some, an Egyptian statement said.

Walker said that Clinton held what he termed as fruitful talks with Israeli Premier Ehud Barak and Palestinian Leader Yasser Arafat.

"Arafat and Barak adopt encouraging stances, urging more efforts on the Syrian track," said Walker.

"US considers the Middle East peace as an integrated process," said Walker.

On Albright`s upcoming tour, Walker said the time has not been fixed yet. He added that the US Middle East Peace Coordinator Dennis Ross would visit the region soon and would cooperate with the Palestinians and Israelis.

On the deadlocked Syrian track, Walker voiced hope that obstacles would be overcome.
