Human rights in Africa still nonexistent
Regional-Africa, Politics, 4/29/2000

Egyptian lawyer Mohammed Moneeb, representative of the non-governmental organizations in the African continent urged yesterday the Organization of African Unity of sign the agreement against torture, calling on the African committee for human rights and African states to persuade the organization to sign it.

This came during the word he delivered before the evening session for the 27th session of the African committee for human rights and people in Algeria.

In his word, Moneeb denounced the human rights violations in Africa, assuring the necessity to ratify the agreement protocol concerning establishing the African court for human rights, criticizing violations of the civil and political liberties and asked for guaranteeing protection of human rights defenders, depicting these defenders of being victims of suppressive imprisonment and harassment due to their activities.
