Conference in Fez assesses Euro-Mediterranean partnership
Regional, Politics, 4/29/2000
An international conference gathering decision-makers and politicians from fourteen European and Mediterranean countries was held in Fez Friday and Saturday to assess Euro-Mediterranean partnership.
The conference surveyed the evolution of Euro-Mediterranean partnership and debated the economic and social challenges facing south Mediterranean countries.
Participants laid a special emphasis on the economic and political complementarity between the two shores of the Mediterranean, noting that a genuine integration would invigorate growth and ease exchanges and movement of persons and goods.
To reduce the gaps between the northern and southern shores, the countries of the south need to consolidate family planning policies, struggle against illiteracy through the generalization of schooling and vocational training, promote scientific research, streamline the administration and improve the economic environment to attract more investments.
Participants called the countries of the north to get rid of the security approach and show sincere will to assist their partners of the south.
