Morocco hands in Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty ratification documents
Morocco-UN, Politics, 4/29/2000

Morocco has handed in to the United Nations this week the document notifying its ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, Morocco's delegate to the UN, Ahmed Snoussi announced.

Talking at the conference on the non-proliferation treaty currently held in New York, the Moroccan diplomat said while the treaty has entailed positive results on international peace and security, its principles and objectives have only been partially fulfilled. He ascribed this to the emergence of new suppliers of nuclear technologies.

Snoussi also noted that a large number of states which do not have nuclear arms are skeptical over the "nuclear states" will to carry on negotiations for nuclear disarmament measures, deploring that the CTBT has not yet entered into force. He also called for the signing of a fissile material ban treaty to support the nuclear non-proliferation system and for clearing tension areas, like the Middle East and Southern Asia, from nuclear weapons.

He added that it is necessary to bring Israel to abide by the agreements signed as part of the Middle East peace process with Palestine, Syria and Lebanon as a strong signal to Israel's will to restore confidence.
