Moroccan official calls for improving education quality
Morocco-International, Education, 4/29/2000

Moroccan secretary of State for cooperation, Aicha Belarbi, called for improvement of quality of education syllabi and methods to achieve the education of all targets.

Belarbi, who chaired the first plenary session of the world forum on education, which opened on Wednesday in the Senegalese capital, underlined that disparities between schools in rural areas and those in urban areas in terms of services, basic equipment and pedagogical means would lead to social inequalities between educational institutions attended by poor children and those attended by the rich.

She said the international community ought to adopt a new approach in the field of education based on international solidarity, South-South and North-South cooperation and a genuine partnership between governments, local councils at national, regional and international levels.

Belarbi said that Morocco should be backed in its efforts to reform the education system, pointing to the adoption by Morocco of an education charter, in keeping the Thailand declaration aimed at ensuring education for all. The charter, she added, is also in line with the principles set by international conventions in education, based on generalizing education, compulsory primary education and fight against illiteracy.

Stressing the importance of new information and communication technologies, the Moroccan official proposed the setting up of a committee to follow up the recommendations of the Havana summit that called rich countries' to transfer new technologies to the poorest countries.
