Jordanian Nation's Council will not receive Israelis
Jordan-Israel, Politics, 4/29/2000
Some 20 Jordanian members of parliament got a commitment from the chairman of the Jordanian Nation's Council not to permit the Israeli parliamentarians taking part in the Inter-Parliamentary Union conference due to start on Sunday evening to enter the headquarters of the Jordanian Parliament.
Independent Jordanian opposition parliament member Khalil Haddadin said that, "20 parliament members representing all political trends signed a memorandum calling on the speaker of the parliament, Abdul Hadi al-Majali, not to permit the Israeli parliamentarians into the premises of the Nation's Council." Haddadin added, "The speaker of the council vowed to meet our request."
Haddadin indicated that since the signing of the Jordanian- Israeli peace agreement in 1994, "No Israeli parliamentarian or official entered the premises of the Jordanian Parliament."
It is, however, decided that sessions of the Inter-Parliamentary Union conference will be held in one of the first class hotels in Amman, at the conference hall.
