Spanish premier in Morocco May 8-9
Morocco-Spain, Politics, 4/28/2000
Spanish Premier Jose Maria Aznar will pay an official visit to Morocco next May 8-9, it was officially announced in Madrid on Thursday.
Aznar will be paying his first official visit abroad after he was sworn in Thursday as Spain's new prime minister following his Popular Party's overwhelming majority in the legislative elections of last March 12.
Aznar-- who is starting his second four-year term as Spain's prime minister-- will be thus perpetuating a tradition initiated since democracy was restored in Spain that the Spanish premier pays his first official visit abroad to Morocco.
Morocco and Spain are bound since 1991 by a treaty of friendship, cooperation and neighborliness that instituted an annual Moroccan-Spanish summit alternately in Rabat and Madrid.
Spain is Morocco's 2nd trade partner and supplier after France.
Meantime, King Mohammed VI has sent a message of congratulations to Jose Maria Aznar following his reelection as president of the Spanish government. The message carries congratulations and best wishes to Aznar for success in his noble mission and wishes of progress and prosperity to the friendly Spanish people.
The king renewed determination to consolidate the traditional ties of friendship and the fruitful cooperation existing between the two kingdoms and voiced will to expand the scope of this cooperation and to raise it up to the two countries' aspirations to longstanding friendship, special ties and genuine partnership between two states that are bound by centuries-old and historical relations.
Aznar was sworn in Thursday as Spain's new prime minister following his Popular Party's overwhelming majority in the legislative elections of last March 12. He is expected in Morocco on May 8 for a two-day official visit to Morocco.
