Oman's Foreign Ministry: Arab states are convinced of the Syrian position

Syrain President Hafez al-Assad met on Thursday in Damascus with Oman's minister of state for foreign affairs, Youssef Bin Alawi, accompanied by the director of the Arab department at Oman's Foreign Ministry, Ahmad Bin Youssef al-Harithi.

Present at the meeting were Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara and Oman's ambassador in Damascus, Hilal Bin Salem al-Seyabi.

Bin Alawi conveyed to President al-Assad a message from Sultan Qaboos Bin Said of Oman, and the president asked the Omani minister to convey a reply message.

Talks dealt with developments in the region and the Arab arena, the situation the Middle East peace process has reached, as well as relations between the two states.

Earlier in the day, Foreign Minister al-Shara held a meeting with his Omani counterpart. The meeting was attended by the deputy foreign minister, Suleiman Haddad, and the director of the Arab department at the Foreign Ministry, Issa Darwish. It was also attended by the chairman of the Arab department at the Omani Foreign Ministry and Oman's ambassador in Damascus.

Talks dealt with developments of conditions in the region, the deadlocked Middle East peace process and the expected Israeli withdrawal from South Lebanon. The two sides also discussed developments in the Arab arena and means of revitalizing joint Arab work and bilateral relations between the two states.

In a statement to reporters following the meeting, Bin Alawi said that Oman and all Arab states stand in support and solidarity with Syria in its just stances.

Bin Alawi added that this meeting was a good chance to exchange views on the latest developments in the region, noting, "I was told about the Syrian position towards the peace process and the summit meeting in Geneva between President Hafez al-Assad and the US president, Bill Clinton."

Bin Alawi added that Oman and the Arab states are convinced of the rightful Syrian position and Syria's desire to achieve a just and comprehensive peace on the grounds established at the Madrid conference.

He indicated that the Arab states back and support the Syrian position providing for Israel's complete withdrawal from the occupied Golan Heights to the June 4, 1967 border lines, and this matter is not bargained.
