On the meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Amman
Jordan, Politics, 4/26/2000

The Jordanian daily al-Dostour has quoted high-ranking Jordanian parliamentary sources as saying that several members of the Parliament in Jordan intend to launch an initiative upon the convening of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Amman.

The initiative is to bring together the Palestinian legislative delegation and the Syrian parliamentary delegation in a friendly meeting.

The paper said that the same sources remarked that such a meeting between the two sides might be difficult in the course of the intensified official relations between the Syrian and Palestinians sides.

The paper also quoted the same source as saying that the Arab states which have special cases-- including Libya, Sudan, Iraq, Palestine, Lebanon and Syria-- continue their contacts to debate their cases pertaining to the embargo and the stand concerning Israel.

Al-Dostour indicated that Israel's participation in the conference, which will be opened on Sunday evening, is still a matter of great controversy in the Jordanian Parliament as the Jordanian opposition parliament members have resumed their efforts to issue a memorandum which demands preventing any Israeli Knesset member from entering the Jordanian Cabinet.

The paper reported that important contacts took place on Tuesday to decide the position to this effect.
