British official arrives in Libya
Libya-UK, Politics, 4/26/2000

The permanent secretary for the British Foreign Office, Sir John Kerr, arrived on Tuesday in Tripoli in a visit to Libya which will last for several days.

During his visit, the British official will hold talks with Libyan officials pertaining to bilateral relations between the two countries and means of backing them, as well as to regional issues of mutual interest.

Kerr is considered the highest-ranking British official to visit Libya since 1984. After years of hostility, the two countries started establishing tight cooperation relations as the UK reopened its embassy in Libya last year after a 15-year closure.

Kerr is to convene with the high-ranking Libyan officials to discuss relations between the two countries during his two-day visit, especially as the trial of the two Libyan suspects in the Lockerbie case is beginning in the Hague.
