Tetuan wind power plant to cover 2% of Morocco's electricity consumption
Morocco, Economics, 4/25/2000

The wind power plant under construction in the northern city of Tetuan will cover 2% of Morocco's annual electricity consumption.

The figures were disclosed to journalists and executives of enterprises operating in the field of electric energy during a field trip to the project Saturday.

The plant, one of the largest in the world, will be operational by next August and will cover the total needs of the city of Tetuan.

The 84 wind-driven generators of the facility that extend over a surface area of 8 km will enable Morocco to reduce oil imports by more than 46,000 tons per year and consequently save nearly $8 million in hard currencies.

The project is environment friendly, as the carbon gas emissions of a coal power station of the same capacity amount to 230,000 tons per year.

The field trip was sponsored by the Marrakesh-based center for the development of renewable energies.
