Havana's hostile stand, obstacle to relations-resumption with Rabat
Morocco, Politics, 4/21/2000
Resumption of diplomatic relations between Rabat and Havana depends on Cuba's review of its stand on the Sahara issue, said on Thursday government spokesman Khalid Alioua.
In a press-briefing following the government council, Alioua said answering reporters Morocco hoped Cuba would review its stand on the Sahara.
The kingdom had repeatedly explained that Havana's hostile attitude and recognition of the self-proclaimed Sahrawi republic were a major obstacle to resumption of normal ties, he said.
The Sahrawi republic was proclaimed by the Polisario, a separatist gang claiming sovereignty over the Sahara, a territory in Southern Morocco that was formerly under Spanish rule and that was retrieved by the kingdom in 1975 under the Madrid accords, MAP reported.
