King Mohammed launches drought-effect alleviation projects in Khouribga province
Morocco, Economics, 4/21/2000

King Mohammed VI, accompanied by Prince Moulay Rachid, is currently visiting the Khouribga province, in central Morocco, to launch more projects meant to alleviate drought-effects in severely-hit areas.

In the city of Boujaad, the sovereign launched on Thursday a drinking-water supply system, worth $ 150,000, to set-up a 4.7 km pipe-network to provide potable water for 360 households. Several tank-cars funded by the Mohammed V Solidarity Foundation were delivered.

The king also opened in downtown Boujaad the first part of a sewer and processing network worth $ 870,000 and traveled to the neighboring rural commune of Oulad Said Loued to launch the works for a water-supply system to cater to the needs of the city and vicinity towns through drilling and use of wells in the Ouled Smail Sidi Saleh area.

Late in the afternoon, King Mohammed VI headed for Oued Zem where he inaugurated the water-supply extension that gives access to running water to three suburban districts. The project, worth $ 1.4 million meets the needs of 15,000 people.

The king visited this Friday the Beni Yakhlef rural commune, 30 km from Khouribga, and launched the first phase of a program of fight against the effects of drought.

The $ 5 million projects to be carried out part of this phase consist of irrigation facilities, the protection of livestock and water supply. He also supervised the distribution of tank-cars to supply neighboring localities with water.

Earlier Friday, King Mohammed VI inaugurated a water storage plant meant to strengthen the water-supply system of the city of Khouribga and neighboring rural communities.

The king is currently touring several provinces to launch projects geared towards alleviation of drought-effects and limiting impact on rural populations.
