Egypt: Total withdrawal from the Golan is the only base to build just peace
Egypt, Politics, 4/21/2000
Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa has called for complete Israeli withdrawal from the Golan to the June 4, 1967 border lines, saying that this is the essence of the Middle East peace process which was built on the ground of international legitimacy resolutions and the land-for-peace formula. He stressed cohesion between the Syrian and Lebanese tracks.
In a statement he made in Cairo on Thursday Moussa stated that Israel needs to realize that just and comprehensive peace means a loss for one side for gains for another one.
The Egyptian foreign minister warned against the consequences of frustration felt among the peoples of the region as a result of the aggressive Israeli practices and Israel's ignorance of the land-for-peace formula.
Moussa asserted his country's full backing for the Syrian position, which calls for Israel's withdrawal to the June 4, 1967 border lines and the restoration of rights. He held Israel responsible for the suspension of this track.
The Egyptian foreign minister also called on the Israeli government to reconsider its negative stances and to move seriously towards the right path as well as to reach a just and comprehensive peace on the grounds of UN resolutions 242, 338 and 425.
Moussa stated that the peace sought by the Arabs is that based on equality, justice and balance, rather than peace based on having hegemony on the resources of the region.
