Trade unions claim 90% observance of ports staff strike
Morocco, Economics, 4/20/2000
The Labor Democratic Confederation (CDT) and the General Union of Moroccan Workers (UGTM) said Wednesday the strike they had called for was observed by more than 90% of the ports staff.
On Wednesday, the two trade unions' adherents decided to extend by two days their strike started on April 12 in the Casablanca port and on April 18 in other ports. They explained that the port authorities are refusing dialogue with their representatives.
The ports staff are claiming an annual 8% increase in their salary and the settlement of problems of staff who are not members of a trade union.
An official at ODEP, the authority managing Moroccan ports, said a meeting will be held shortly with the trade unions.
