Hain: Syria is interested to make peace
Regional-UK, Politics, 4/20/2000
The British minister of state at the Foreign Office, Peter Hain, has announced that British diplomats are working behind the scenes to give the Middle East peace process a push forward. He remarked that despite the deadlock on the Syrian track there are hopes of achieving progress.
In an interview for the British Jewish Chronicle paper, Hain added that it is not correct to say that Britain is not helping the Middle East peace process.
He continued that London is working intensively to reach agreements on the Syrian and Palestinian tracks. He added that all reports and information he is receiving stress that Syria is interested in the realization of peace.
On Israel's withdrawal from south Lebanon, Hain stated that British views state that it would be better for Israel to withdraw from Lebanon within an agreement. He added that it is premature to propose the contents of the security measures that should be implemented in light of the withdrawal from south Lebanon.
