US official meets Maghreban officials over economic partnership initiative

US Undersecretary for Economic Affairs Alan Larson held a meeting here Tuesday in Washington with Moroccan, Algerian and Tunisian officials over the US-Maghreban economic partnership project, known as the "Eizenstat initiative."

The meeting was attended by officials from the US trade department, the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) and the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

The Eizenstat initiative was also the topic of a ministerial symposium on prospects and opportunities of consolidating cooperation in investments between the USA and the three north African countries.

The initiative bearing the name of former economic affairs under-secretary Stuart Eizenstat was launched three years ago to promote economic development, business opportunities and economic and trade cooperation between the United States and North African countries through incentives to private investment and the advent of a market at the Maghreban scale.

Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia are gathered, together with Libya and Mauritania, in the Arab Maghreb Union (UMA).
