Egypt criticizes Israel's policy in refusing to join NPT
Egypt, Politics, 4/19/2000
Egypt's permanent representative at the UN, Ahmad Abu al-Gheith, has criticized the continued Israeli policy in refusing to join the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) for nuclear weapons. He stressed that Israel not joining this treaty constitutes a defiance of the will of the international community to free the world from nuclear weapons.
Abu al-Gheith warned, in a statement to Sawt al-Arab radio on Tuesday, against the dangers of Israel's continued opposition to joining the NPT.
He stated that Israel continues to refuse joining the NPT and to subject its establishments and nuclear programs to the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency, a matter which constitutes a grave danger to the Middle East region as a whole and to the world.
The Egyptian permanent representative at the UN called for setting a practical mechanism for Israel joining the treaty, adding that Israel continues to refuse to join this treaty which was approved and implemented in 1970.
The 6th conference to review the NPT will start its works on April 24 at the premises of the UN General Assembly in New York.
