Levy accuses Syria of not being ready for peace
Syria-Israel, Politics, 4/18/2000
Israeli Foreign Minister David Levy asserted that Syria is not yet ready for peace, accusing it of wanting Israel to remain in Lebanon for good, in reference to what is known as "the Lebanese card" that is provided by the Syrian existence in Lebanon, saying Israel has tried a lot with Syria, but that Israel did not make it because Syria has its own considerations while Israel does not.
He said Israel is frustrated by Syria's position and the failure of negotiations with it, but Israel did not lose hope for the future.
Levy stated that Israel will not remain submitted to Syria's refusal which is aimed at keeping Israel in Lebanon and that Israel decided to leave Lebanon because it hopes that the UN Security Council will immediately create a mechasim to overcome the risks.
He said Israel is looking forward to the day in which Syria decides to establish peace with Israel.
