Suzanne Mubarak inspects works at Library of Alexandria
Egypt, Culture, 4/18/2000

Egypt's First Lady Suzanne Mubarak, Chairperson of the Honorary Committee on Resurrecting Alexandria Library, inspected works at the Library of Alexandria, a historical, scientific and cultural center.

Mrs. Suzanne held a meeting with the Project Follow-Up Committee to listen to a report on the works of the past three months, and the outcome of contacts made with international institutions, interested states and the friendly associations of the Library.

About 96% of the works have been already completed. By the end of August, the project will have been completed and the Library will open on an experimental basis, prior to the official ceremony to be held later.

Mrs. Mubarak also opened Mahmoud Saeed Center for Museums in Ganacles area. The center includes the Museums of Saeed, the brothers Adham and Saif Wanley and modern Egyptian arts.

The First Lady also opened the Birds Museum at Kom El-Dekka, which was discovered by a Dutch Mission that started on excavations since 1960s. The Museum houses a theater, restrooms and a villa with the floors was neatly designed in the shape of birds.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Mubarak is due to chair on Wednesday a meeting of the National Council for Women in which a flurry of issues will be discussed.

"The meeting will tackle proposals on competence of the Council's Executive Committee," said Mervat Al-Tellawi, Secretary General of the Council.
