Syria celebrates national day
Syria, Politics, 4/18/2000

Marking the Evacuation Day's (independence) 54th anniversary, a large central rally was held in Damascus on Monday under the patronage of Syrian President Hafez al-Assad. Acting on behalf of President al-Assad, the rally was attended by Vice President Muhammad Zuheir Masharqa.

In a speech he made Masharqa indicated the "great achievements realized in Syria under the leadership of the Baath Party." He added that the March 5 revolution in 1963, followed by the Correctionist Movement (when President al-Assad came to power in Syria in 1970) led to comprehensive development covering political, economic, social and cultural life in a way that enabled Syria to occupy a leading position among world countries.

He reiterated Syria's principled stances, saying, "On every occasion Syria stresses that peace is its strategic option," adding that the peace Syria wants is "he just and comprehensive one which is based on international legitimacy resolutions and the Security Council resolutions 242, 338 and 425. It is the peace which leads to Israel's withdrawal from the occupied Syrian Golan to the June 4, 1967 border lines and from south Lebanon as well as the western Bekaa and the occupied Arab lands, foremost of which is holy Jerusalem."

He quoted President al-Assad's statement as saying that peace cannot go with occupation, and that the occupation cannot continue for ever. He said, "We are determined to continue the struggle till we liberate all our lands and rights."
