Canadian premier talks in Damascus

Syrian Prime Minister Muhammad Mustafa Miro and his Canadian counterpart, Jean Chretien, started their talks on Monday evening in Damascus.
In a welcoming speech, the Syrian premier remarked that this visit by the Canadian premier is "an opportunity to review ideas and views which are capable of opening wide the prospects between Syria and Canada in the political, economic, trade and cultural areas."
He added, "We in Syria are willing to develop and activate bilateral relations for the benefit of the two countries, especially as Canada is one of the most advanced and developed countries in the world and because of its contribution to boosting international relations."
The Syrian prime minister stressed that Syria works to complete its development plans and to promote its political, economic and cultural relations with all friendly countries. Miro added that Syria continues sincere efforts for the achievement of a just and comprehensive peace in the region in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions.
He commented, "We appreciate all endeavors exerted by international circles, including Canada, to give the Middle East peace process a push forward in line with the Madrid terms of reference and the land-for-peace formula."
For his part, the Canadian prime minister expressed thanks to Syria's president, people and government for the warm hospitality he received in Syria. He also congratulated the Syrians on the occasion of the Evacuation Day which falls April 17. He stated: "I am here in Damascus to discuss the issue of improving cooperation between the two countries on all levels.
The Canadian Prime minister expressed his country's readiness to contribute to overcoming obstacles hindering the peace process in the region because, "Peace means prosperity to the peoples of the region."
Earlier in the day, the Canadian premier and his wife arrived in Damascus in a visit to Syria. He was welcomed by Premier Miro, the Cabinet ministers, high-ranking Syrian officials and the Canadian ambassador in Damascus.
