IDB helps complete Indonesian irrigation project

The Islamic Development Bank (IDB) provided $13.615 million in aid for an irrigation project in the Indonesian province of South Sulawesi, the Indonesian news agency ANTARA reported.
According to the source, the first stage of the Maloso irrigation project had already been completed between 1996 and 1999.
The second stage of construction work started in 1999, are scheduled for completion in 2000 or 2001 at the latest.
The second phase work covers the building of a 12,400 km primary canal, and a 77,100 km secondary canal, in addition to other facilities.
The rest of the work covers 62,600 km of disposal conduits, 20 km of roads, eight bridges, 58 tertiary network blocks and eight fish pond network blocks.
The project is expected to boost agricultural production from 2.5 to 5 tons per ha, and the production of fish ponds with a view to raising the income of local farmers.
The project will also allow better control of floods by the improvement of disposal conduits, and contribute to boosting agricultural production in the coastal areas.
The project will irrigate a total of 6,256 ha of rice fields and 2,915 ha of fishpond in neighboring areas. It will irrigate 22,258 ha of rice fields and 381 ha of fishpond.
