Human rights center dedicated in Rabat
Morocco, Politics, 4/17/2000
A center for human rights documentation, information and training was dedicated in Rabat Saturday in the presence of the U.N high commissioner for human rights, Mary Robinson.
Moroccan Human Rights Minister Mohamed Aujar said the setting up of the center translates the sincerity of Morocco's international commitments in matters of human rights.
The center, he said, will be open to governmental and non-governmental sectors in a spirit of consultation and cooperation and will thus contribute to consolidating democracy in Morocco.
Aujar surveyed the progress scored by Morocco in human rights matters, efforts to promote human rights and consecrate the rule of the law and moves undertaken to ensure a harmonious development of the country and to guarantee to all Moroccans dignity and justice as well as social, economic, political and civil rights.
He mentioned some of the practical measures adopted such as the decision made by King Mohammed VI to set up an independent commission entrusted with compensating missing people and victims of arbitrary detention or their rightful claimants.
Echoing him, Robinson underscored Morocco's human rights experience that was crowned by the settlement of the issue of victims of arbitrary detention and hailed Morocco's commitment to guarantee the respect of human rights.
The new era ushered in by King Mohammed VI will surely consecrate human rights and defend the rights of most vulnerable layers of the society.
Aujar added that the government is implementing a major program for adapting the national laws to international human rights charters and conventions and that Morocco is also working out a national program for human rights education with the objective of making schools promote human rights values among mounting generations.
