Morocco bans two weeklies over interview with separatist leader
Morocco, Politics, 4/17/2000

The latest issues of Moroccan weeklies "Essahifa" and "Le Journal," printed abroad, were banned from entering Morocco for containing an interview with the leader of the separatist Polisario.

A statement of the Communications Ministry said in accordance with law article 29, Prime Minister, Abderrahmane Youssoufi, has issued orders to ban entry to Morocco of the two weeklies which contain an interview with Mohamed Abdelaziz El Marrakchi.

The weeklies' manager interviewed the separatist following an event in Washington organized by the enemies of Morocco's territorial integrity, MAP said.

The statement said this is only one of the excesses in the editorial line of the two publications (owned by the same company) regarding the handling of the Moroccan Sahara issue.

The statement asserted that the government, concerned with the need to guarantee public freedoms and the press freedom, made the decision to renew its resolve to firmly face up any attempt to the feelings of the Moroccan people, who is mobilized behind king Mohammed VI and who is making sacrifices to defend the country's unity and foil plans by enemies of Morocco.

The decision also draws its legitimacy from the present juncture as Morocco is seeking to settle the issue by consecrating international recognition of the Moroccan people's right to enjoy its territorial integrity and preserve its sovereignty over all of its national territory, the statement goes on.

The communication ministry's release further rejects the publication of the said interview as a profit-seeking action, a race for stardom and a tendency to acquaint with foreign circles that mis-exploit the ongoing democratic openness and consolidation of the rule of law under the promising reign and the leadership of King Mohammed VI, MAP reported.
