The UN and Israel's withdrawal from south Lebanon
Lebanon-Israel-UN, Politics, 4/17/2000

Diplomatic sources in New York stated on Sunday that Israel will inform the UN officially today of its decision to pull out unilaterally from south Lebanon, completely and unconditionally, before next July.

Monte Carlo radio quoted one diplomat as saying that the UN expects Israel to clearly determine that the withdrawal will be to the international borders of 1923.

Another diplomat stated that the Israeli message will lead to intensifying contacts between sides concerned to avoid the eruption of any acts of violence following the Israeli withdrawal from south Lebanon.

The radio report said this explains the visit which was due yesterday to Paris by Israeli Foreign Minister David Levy following the visit French Defense Minister Allen Richard held to Israel to discuss the French role in south Lebanon after the Israeli withdrawal from it.

Meanwhile, an Israeli security source said on Sunday that Israel had withdrawn from the April Understanding committee in south Lebanon.

The Israeli radio stated, quoting this source, that Israel will not return to the meetings of the committee unless the Hizbullah Party stops violating the provisions of the April Understanding, at least within one week.
