World Bank denies issuing report on tax corruption in Egypt
Egypt, Economics, 4/15/2000

Prime Minister Atef Ebeid said the World Bank has denied issuing a report on the corruption of some tax officials in Egypt.

Speaking to reporters, Ebeid added that he has received a reply from the WB asserting that the International Financial Corporation has not produced any report criticizing, or charging with graft, any governmental body in Egypt.

Ebeid explained that a number of businessmen and investors had complained, in a study of the kinds of problems facing them, about differences with tax authorities.

Ebeid underlined that the study made absolutely no reference to corruption or bribes.

"The majority of cases involving disagreement with the authorities to failure of good book keeping," Ebeid said.
