Group of 77 calls for lifting sanctions against Libya
Libya, Politics, 4/15/2000

The South Summit, which wound up Friday in Hava - Cuba, called on the United Nations Security Council to pass a resolution lifting the sanctions imposed on Libya.

Participants, who stressed in the South Summit Declaration that Libya fully met the conditions set forth in the relevant Security Council resolutions, urged the U.N. body to pass a resolution totally lifting the sanctions.

Sanctions were decreed on Libya in 1992 for alleged involvement in the bombing of a Pan-Am airliner over the Scottish village of Lockerbie in 1988, killing all passengers.

The sanctions were suspended last year, after Tripoli handed over two suspects to the Hague-based International Court of Justice.

The G-77 conference, that was attended by 42 heads of state and government of developing nations, voiced concern over the severe economic impact of the sanctions on Libya.

They also called for an immediate lifting of other sanctions imposed unilaterally on the Maghreban nation.
