G-77 summit calls for Jerusalem as Palestine's capital
Regional, Politics, 4/15/2000
The leaders of 42 developing nations, who met in Havana -Cuba this week part of the Group of 77 (G-77) summit, called for recognizing the independent Palestinian state with Al-Quds (Jerusalem) as capital.
"Peace requires that Israel withdraw from the Palestinian territories it occupies, including Al-Quds," said the Declaration of the South Summit, passed at the end of the Havana summit.
Peace also requires that "a final settlement be reached before the final date (september 2000) with the proclamation of independent Palestine with Al-Quds as capital," the Declaration stated.
Participants underlined that development in the Middle-East necessarily goes through putting an end to the Israeli occupation and the establishment of a global, fair and lasting peace. They also renewed their backing to the peace process based on the UN Security Council resolutions and the Land-For-Peace Principle.
The summit denounced Israel's attempts to alter the geographical and demographic composition of the holy city.
"We affirm that the measures adopted by Israel to modify the juridical statute and the demographic composition of Al-Quds are null and void," the Declaration read.
Participants also called Israel to withdraw from the occupied Syrian Golan Heights and from southern Lebanon and Bekaa.
