Al-Shara: the line of June 4 is on the north of east bank of Tiberis lake and not anywhere else
Syria, Politics, 4/15/2000

Syria's foreign minister Farouk al-Shara on Friday evening addressed the Group of 77 south summit in a statement stressing Syria's unwavering positions towards major issues facing the Arab states.

He stated that the government of Israel which has declared to the world that its program is to achieve peace process, refuses to implement UN Security Council resolutions which were considered at Madrid conference the bases without which no just and comprehensive peace could be reached in the Middle East.

Al-Shara added that Israel's evasion of peace is accompanied with a broad media campaign that aims to mislead world opinion and to put the false claim that the Arab side is the one who undermines the peace process, whereas in fact it is Israel who undermines the entire peace process and drives the region of focusing on its social and economic development.

He continued that Syria, who affirms anew that its strategic choice is peace, stresses once again that the line of June 4 is on the North East bank of the Tibreris lake and not any where else because it is a precise embodiment of UN Security Council resolution 242.

Al-Shara added that the public opinion in Israel has to know that most of its drinking water has its sources in Syria and Lebanon. Hence, the Israelis have to realize that their need for a just and comprehensive peace should be paralleled to their need for secure and continuous water. As for the red lines, they are decided by United Nations resolutions and the principles of the international law, and not by statements and articles uttered and written by some extremist Israelis and some others whether they were official or nonofficial figures.

On the role played by the UN in finding out solutions to the problems countries of the south suffer, al-Shara stated that it is clear that there are extreme difficulties in the way of achieving deep reforms in the structure of the UN. These difficulties, he added, may continue for many years and for obvious reasons which every one is ware of. But in order to be able to introduce these reforms, " our countries" have to continue to adhere to the UN resolutions and to implement them without being selective and without applying double standards. Also the UN charter should be respected by all members big or small.
