King Mohammed meets Pope John Paul II at Holy See
Morocco-Vatican, Politics, 4/14/2000
King Mohammed VI visited Thursday the Holy See where he conferred with Pope John Paul II.
Upon arrival at the Saint Damaso Hall, the king was greeted by the Swiss Guard and the Moroccan anthem before meeting religious dignitaries and heading for the papal house library and a private meeting with the pope.
After the meeting and trading of presents, the Commander of the Faithful and the Head of Christendom posed for a photo opportunity to illustrate the coming together of two of the divine religions.
Ties between Rabat and the Holy See are of special nature. In 1985, Morocco was the first ever Moslem country to be visited by Pope John Paul II after the late king Hassan II showed the way in April 1980 becoming the first Moslem leader to visit the Holy See.
