Lebanon: Our borders are known, we refuse any new border demarcation
Lebanon-Israel, Politics, 4/14/2000
Lebanon has renewed its opposition to giving Israel any security arrangements outside the framework of a comprehensive and just peace, according to cohesion between the Syrian and Lebanese tracks. Lebanon also stressed that all Israeli proposals on the international borders are rejected in content and details because these borders are clear, demarcated and documented at the UN, according to UN resolutions.
These views were expressed by Lebanese Prime Minister Salim al-Hoss on Thursday, who added, "It is quite evident that Israel in its words and deeds continues its flagrant maneuvers to escape the peace settlement."
Al-Hoss added in his statements in Beirut on Thursday that, "Israel at one time speaks about implementing UN resolution 425 which states its withdrawal until the international borders unconditionally and again speaks about the existence of more than one international border with Lebanon, which is an illusion which only exists in the imaginations of the Israelis."
Al-Hoss asserted that Lebanon's borders are one, demarcated and documents and internationally recognized, according to an agreement.
He went on saying that the UN has asserted these borders in 1949 according to the truce agreement. These borders, he said, were also stressed by the UN Security Council in its resolution no 425, and therefore it needs no demarcation.
Al-Hoss said that UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Thursday said in his report on this matter to the chairman of the UN Security Council that the UN will not move concerning what has been asked by Israel of border demarcation with Lebanon, unless it receives an official message on that from the Israeli government.
Al-Hoss also indicated that statements by Israel only aim at disturbing the public opinion and the international community.
