Morocco, Italy sign agriculture cooperation accord
Morocco-Italy, Agriculture, 4/13/2000

Morocco and Italy concluded Wednesday in Rome a cooperation agreement providing for the exchange of expertise in agricultural matters.

The announcement was made by Moroccan minister of agriculture and rural development, Habib Malki, in a statement to the Moroccan TV RTM.

Malki-- who is part of the Moroccan delegation accompanying King Mohammed VI, currently on a state visit to Italy-- said Morocco decided to associate Italy in the Moroccan anti-drought struggle strategy. Italy will extend backing to Moroccan farmers through mechanization and new irrigation techniques, he said.

Morocco will equally benefit from Italy's expertise in olive farming, Malki said, announcing that Morocco and Italy agreed to hold by the end of May in Rabat a meeting of Mediterranean agriculture ministers.

The ministerial meeting will discuss agriculture prospects in the region in light of globalization.
