Italy pledges to help Morocco succeed in reform undertakings
Morocco-Italy, Politics, 4/13/2000

Italy pledged in Rome Wednesday to help Morocco carry out the political, economic and social reforms it ushered in to modernize the country, liberalize the economy and consolidate the foundations of political democracy.

The pledge was made by the president of the Italian Council, Massimo d'Alema, at a luncheon he hosted in honor of King Mohammed VI who is currently on an official visit to Italy.

Addressing the king, the Italian premier said, "Italy will be at your side and at Morocco's side on the path leading to the success of reforms."

He hailed the reform process initiated by the king since his coming to power, a process that is meant, he said, "to make millions of Moroccan citizens share the opportunities offered by a broader economic development and by new opportunities of social growth."

Italy, he added, is ready to make Morocco benefit from its expertise and know-how in matters of small and medium sized enterprises, to contribute to the development of priority sectors of Moroccan economy and promote its job-generating capacity.

Touching on relations between Morocco and the European Union, the prime minister stressed the need to consolidate the association accord so that rapports between the two sides become deeper and pledged to work to promote relations between the two shores of the Mediterranean.

Describing Morocco as a reliable Mediterranean partner, D'Alema said, "A modern, stable Morocco is a key element for peace, prosperity and development in the Mediterranean."

King Mohammed also met on Wednesday with the speaker of the Italian Senate, Nicola Mancino.
