The Arabs will not close Israel's nuclear file
Regional, Politics, 4/13/2000

Egypt's permanent representative at the UN, Ahmad Abu al-Gheit, has asserted that the Arab states will try at the 6th revision conference of the treaty banning nuclear weapons due to be held in New York on April 24 through May 19 to have Israel referred to as the only country in the region which has not yet joined this treaty and to be asked officially to join it so as to ensure the safety of the region and evacuate it from nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction.

However, the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) for nuclear weapons was set into implementation in 1970. It bans all its member states from owning or obtaining nuclear weapons, with the exception of the five permanent member states at the UN Security Council: the US, France, Britain, China and the former Soviet Union.
