Morocco attends World Bank energy week
Morocco-International, Economics, 4/12/2000

General manager of the national electricity facility (Office National D'electricit), Driss Benhima, is taking part in the energy week held by the World Bank April 11-13 in Washington.

Benhima is part of the experts from a limited number of countries invited to help the financial institution orient its energy strategy.

He will make a presentation on Morocco's experience in generalizing electricity supply to the rural world. He will also participate in a debate on the participation of the private sector in promoting renewable energies and expound the kingdom's experience regarding wind power stations and solar energy.

The South African minister of energy and mines is the only other African official taking part in the energy week.

The Energy Week is an annual gathering of energy staff from across the World Bank Group (WBG). It provides a forum where they can discuss issues of sector strategy and how these relate to the WBG client countries. It is one of the few opportunities when the majority of energy staff can network with each other and with a broad spectrum of professionals from outside the institution from all over the world.

One of the central issues facing the World Bank Group in the energy sector is how to reach the estimated two billion people with no access to modern energy, and how to ensure that reforms to promote greater efficiency and to reduce environmental impact contribute to their welfare rather than pass them by, or even worsen their position.
