UMT turns down draft labor code
Morocco, Politics, 4/12/2000
The Moroccan Labor Union (UMT) turned down the draft labor code describing it as prejudicial to wage-earners' rights and to employment security.
In a letter addressed to the Moroccan minister of social development, solidarity, employment and vocational training, the UMT secretary general, Mahjoub Ben Seddik, explained among others that the draft considers the right to unionist protest as a professional misconduct and opens the way to arbitrary firing.
The draft, the letter added, did not take into consideration the trade unions' proposals.
