Lebanon, Politics, 4/12/2000
AP quoted a spokesman for the spiritual leader of the Hizbullah movement Hussein Fadlullah as saying on Tuesday in Beirut that the later had escaped an assassination attempt while he was reading a sermon in a mosque in Beirut during last Friday's prayers.
The spokesman told the agency that fire was opened while Fadlullah was delivering his sermon, but no casualties were reported and the Lebanese security forces are now investigating this matter.
Meanwhile, the Lebanese al-Kifah al-Arabi paper on Tuesday stated that a Shiite man from Bin Jbeil town in the security area of south Lebanon, occupied by Israel was arrested after fire was opened on Sheikh Fadlullah from a "soundless" pistol.
The spokesman refused to confirm any acts of arrest and did not give details on the attack which took place in a mosque in Haret Hreik district, which has a Shiite majority.
Fadlullah had escaped several assassination attempts, including a booby-trapped car near his house in 1985. The incident resulted in killing 80 persons.
Then, Fadlullah held the CIA responsible for the explosion.
