Mubarak meets Euro Jewish delegation, key Belgian senator

President Hosni Mubarak yesterday met with a delegation of European Jewry following their meeting with Foreign Minister Amr Moussa earlier in the day.

Chairman of the European Jewish Congress Henry Hogdenberg said that they were seeking to turn what he termed as cold peace between Egypt and Israel into "warm peace." Hagdenberg said Egypt had accepted a proposal for Jewish intellectuals, teachers and journalists to visit Cairo in September to meet their Egyptian counterparts, an Egyptian statement said.

"We think we will have meetings with civil society in September. As Jews, we can play a role to make people know each other better, to support the peace process," he said.

Hagdenberg said Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat agreed to a similar proposal at a meeting in Gaza on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian role in pushing forward the Middle East peace process figured high in President Mubarak's meeting with Speaker of the Belgian Senate Arman de Deiker. Discussion included Egyptian proposals to free the Middle East of weapons of mass destruction and hold a world conference against terrorism. The Belgian senator told reporters after the meeting that Egypt's peacemaking role would assume more importance to improve prospects for regional peace.

He added that he would take up the promotion of Egyptian-Belgian relations during meetings with Prime Minister Atef Ebeid and Speaker of the People's Assembly Fathi Sorour.
