Saudi FM and Syrian- Israeli peace talks
Saudi Arabia, Politics, 4/10/2000
AFP said that Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal has denied on Saturday in Jeddah news reports which said that Riyadh is making efforts to revive the Syrian- Israeli negotiations.
In a statement he made following the meeting of the Gulf Cooperation Council foreign ministers, al-Faisal added there are no Saudi efforts to revive the negotiations between Syria and Israel.
He proceeded that Syria is in contact with the US mediator, that Syria knows the elements on the grounds of which it builds its decision and that Syria is not in need of anybody to convince it to resume the negotiations.
Al-Faisal also denied reports which talked about a visit he had made to Damascus with the objective of reviving Syrian- Israeli negotiations.
However, an Arab diplomatic source in Paris had stated that Saudi Arabia is working, away from limelight but relentlessly, in order to reach a Syrian- Israeli settlement over the question of Tiberies lake, a matter which permits the resumption of the peace talks suspended since January this year.
