Benaissa says Morocco never applied for EU membership
Morocco-Egypt, Politics, 4/8/2000

Moroccan Foreign affairs and cooperation minister Mohamed Benaissa flatly denied a would-be Moroccan bid to integrate into the European Union saying the kingdom has not asked for EU membership, MAP reported.

Benaissa told Egyptian news agency "MENA" what has been reported was groundless because Morocco, as an Arab, African and Moslem country could never be a member of the union.

Since the advent of King Mohammed VI, he explained, the kingdom has moved fast adapting to sweeping change worldwide as epitomized by globalization. Under the king's wise leadership, government and civil society are busy consolidating democracy and the rule of law, initiated by his late father King Hassan II, to be better prepared for world change, Benaissa said.
