Report: US administration and a pressure plan on Syria
Syria-USA, Politics, 4/8/2000

The Paris-based weekly al-Muharrir News said that "the Zionist lobby" in Washington started to exert great pressures on the US administration with the aim of cordoning Syria without imposing declared sanctions on it, similar to those on Iraq, Iran, Libya and Sudan.

In its reports from London, Paris and Washington, the weekly added that sources in the US administration and the Congress stressed that the US National Security Council and the US State and Defense Departments in Washington are coordinating among themselves to try to pressure Syria in the hope of forcing it to give up its position in the negotiations and give up its main demand of an Israeli pullout to the June 4, 1967 border line.

The weekly added that the plan against Syria has three facets. The first is an intensive political campaign depicting Damascus as the side which caused the halting of the peace process during the Geneva meeting and that the ball now is in its court, the second facet is politically connecting American interests and citizens and the UN forces in the Middle East. In this regard the weekly said that the US National Security Council is working on creating a "tough note" to be handed over to Damascus, which will try to revive the question of the alleged "terrorist" groups and organizations which exist in Syria and Lebanon which, together with the Katyusha missiles owned by the Hizbullah Party and certain Palestinian groups will be a danger to the establishment of peace in the region.

The third facet in the plan is military and was assigned to the US Defense Department where the US has gone to the main countries in the Middle East to promote this facet and put it into immediate implementation.

The weekly made it clear that this third trend is the mot dangerous in the plan of containing Syria. It works to pump, once again, the spirit in the question of the military pact between Turkey and Israel and to undermine the relations between Damascus and Ankara on the one hand and between Damascus and Amman, on the other hand.
