Egyptian ambassador to Israel and the Syrian track
Egypt-Regional, Politics, 4/8/2000

The London-based al-Sharq al-Awsat (Middle East) daily said on Friday in its report from Cairo that the Egyptian ambassador to Israel, Muhammad Bassiouni, unveiled important thoughts and proposals on overcoming obstacles impeding the peace process and ending the stalemate in negotiations, adding that these thoughts and proposals are tackled in an extremely secret atmosphere.

The paper added that Bassiouni had visited Cairo on Wednesday and met with the Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa and informed Cairo about the developments on the Syrian track and his assessment of the general conditions in Israel.

Bassiouni said his mission in Cairo came after new developments took place on the Syrian track, but he refused to unmask these developments and confined himself to saying that the political leadership in Egypt knows about these "new developments" in order to take proper steps, decisions or moves.

Bassiouni asserted that Egypt is not a broker in the Middle East peace.

He added, "We are a complete partner to Syria, the Palestinians and the Lebanese in order to reach a just solution and settlement," stating that his task is to convey thoughts and follow up on developments.
